New Traffic Checking tool released
Savvy marketers can now research competitor traffic for free. This free tool, provided by metricsmarket.com is proving a real hit with a webmaster community that cannot justify the extreme cost for similar data from companies like comScore.

The service provides total visits or visitor sessions (not unique visitors). The difference between these figures is quite distinct and often misunderstood. Essentially, we track all visits to a website, regardless of whether the user is a repeat (or unique) visitor. There is currently no known way to accurately track unique visitors other than using cookies. As cookies require direct access to each server and website, this is not viable when tracking a large audience.

The algorithm is constantly being modified and accuracy is increasing all the time.

The information is usually accurate to within 5-15% of actual traffic figures, although occasionally a site will fall outside that percentage. Even so, we have yet to find any statistics that more accurately measure and provide this information at no cost to the user.

Methodology is proprietary information and a closely guarded secret at this time until we have completed investigations into protection and copyright. Information is gathered from a large segment of Internet users and covers at least the top 3 million websites worldwide and cross checked against various sources to provide the most accurate figure.

Additional paid services are due to be added in the first quarter 2004 to provide users with cross checking, categorization, geographic information, alerting and email updates/notifications. You will be able to see exactly where your site stands in the marketplace against top 10 competitors as well as any other specified sites. This comparison will also include all important search engine information such as search saturation, sites linking to you and keyword relevance.
